Volusia County’s Coastline to Receive Federal Interest Determination

Volusia County’s coastline will undergo a Federal Interest Determination (FID) by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Jacksonville District to determine coastal storm and erosion risks. The evaluation is a first step in determining whether the USACE will proceed with a more comprehensive study of the County's coastal needs and potential solutions.
The review will examine existing information about coastal storm and erosion risks, potential impacts to homes, businesses, public access and public infrastructure, and whether the challenges facing Volusia County fall within the USACE’s federal authority. The overall determination and approval process is projected to take no more than 45 days once initiated.
If the federal review advances, the next step would be a comprehensive feasibility study to further evaluate Volusia County's coastal storm risk and potential improvements. That process could ultimately lead to a federally authorized and funded coastal storm risk management project that would provide another tool for reducing coastal storm risk to homes, businesses, and public infrastructure along the shoreline. Volusia is one of only two counties along Florida's Atlantic coast currently without a federally authorized project.
The FID will determine whether the USACE can play a larger role and partner with Volusia County in mitigating future coastal storm challenges. Volusia County appreciates the support of its local, State, and Federal legislative delegations and the USACE in advancing the FID, and will continue working with its partners to strengthen the long-term resilience of Volusia County's coastline.
