Into the Abyss: Leon County "Library Lunch Break" Series Continues with Discussion of American Classic Moby-Dick

Leon County Government continues its celebration of the U.S. Semiquincentennial during the next program in the Library Lunch Break series, “Moby-Dick and the Endless Afterlives of the White Whale,” on Wednesday, August 12, from 12 to 1 p.m. at the Leon County Main Library, 200 West Park Avenue.

Dr. Aaron Jaffe will explore the journey of Herman Melville’s 1851 American epic Moby-Dick from early neglect to powerful resurrections, including D.H. Lawrence restoring Melville to the literary canon, Ray Bradbury wrestling the leviathan for Hollywood, and the playful digital experiment of Emoji Dick, a crowdsourced reimagining of the novel in emoji. Attendees will find out why this novel continues to be endlessly renewed and why every generation seems to need its own whale.

Dr. Jaffe is the Frances Cushing Ervin Professor of American Literature at Florida State University, where he teaches modernism and modern and contemporary literature, culture, and media.

This program is free and open to the public. Participants are welcome to bring their lunch. Refreshments will also be provided by the library.

In addition to the Library Lunch Break series, Leon County Government is offering a limited-edition America250 library card at no cost to anyone eligible for a Leon County Public Library card by visiting any library location.
